JPG, PNG or WebP: which should you use?
- JPG: best for photos. Files are small and work everywhere, but there is no transparency.
- PNG: best for logos, screenshots and graphics with sharp edges or transparent areas. It is lossless, so files are larger.
- WebP: a modern format that is usually smaller than JPG or PNG and supports transparency. All current browsers support it.

How to convert an image

- For JPG or WebP, set the quality. A value of 90% is a good start.

Transparent backgrounds
JPG cannot store transparency. When you convert a transparent PNG or WebP to JPG, the clear areas are filled with a background color. It is white by default, and you can choose another color to match your design.
Tips for better results
- Do not convert a JPG to PNG to improve quality. Detail already lost cannot be restored.
- Converting to PNG can make files much larger, because PNG is lossless.
- Use WebP for websites when you want small files and wide support.
- Keep your original files in case you need another format later.
Good to know
Animated GIFs keep only their first frame. Some formats, such as HEIC from iPhones, cannot be read by most browsers, and the tool will tell you if a file cannot be opened.
