Unit Converter: Convert Length, Weight, Temperature and More
Recipes, travel, science and shopping all use different units. A Unit Converter changes one unit into another instantly, so you can stop guessing and searching.
What can you convert?
- Length: millimeters, centimeters, meters, kilometers, inches, feet, yards and miles.
- Weight: milligrams, grams, kilograms, tons, ounces, pounds and stone.
- Temperature: Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin.
- Volume: milliliters, liters, cups, tablespoons, pints, quarts and gallons.
- Area, speed and time: square meters, acres, hectares, km/h, mph, knots, hours, days and years.
- Data: bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes and terabytes.
How to use the converter
- Choose the type of unit, such as Length.
- Type a value and pick the From and To units.
- Read the result, which updates as you type.
- Press the swap button to reverse the conversion.
Below the result, an All conversions grid shows your value in every unit of that type at once.
Handy examples
- 1 kilometer is about 0.62 miles.
- 1 kilogram is about 2.2 pounds.
- 0 degrees Celsius is 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
- 1 US cup is about 237 milliliters.
Why temperature is different
Most units convert by multiplying. Temperature scales start at different points, so the tool uses the correct formulas instead of a simple multiplier. For example, Fahrenheit equals Celsius times 9/5 plus 32.
Things to watch for
- US and UK measures differ. Gallons, cups and fluid ounces here are US measures.
- Months and years use average lengths, since real months vary.
- Data units: KB, MB and GB use 1000, while KiB, MiB and GiB use 1024, so results differ slightly.
Who uses it?
Cooks convert recipe amounts, travelers switch between kilometers and miles, students check homework, and shoppers compare sizes and weights across countries.
Tips for accurate conversions
- Check the unit names before you copy a result. Ounces can mean weight or fluid volume.
- Round only at the end when you chain several conversions.
- For cooking, weigh ingredients in grams when you can. It is more precise than cups.
